HANDSPLIT, RESAWN & TAPER SAWN

Shingles are sawn on both sides, have a relatively smooth face and back and are produced in four grades and three lengths.

w No. 1 Blue Label Shingles are our premium grade of shingles for roofs and sidewalls. These top-grade shingles are 100% heartwood, 100% clear and 100% edge grain. No. 1 Grooved Sidewall Shingles have the same specifications as rebutted-rejointed shingles except that the shingle face has been striated. Available in natural color or factory primed in white or grey.

w No. 2 Red Label Shingles are a good grade for all applications. Not less than 10-inch clear on 16-inch shingles, 11-inch clear on 18-inch shingles and 16-inch clear on 24-inch shingles. Flat grain and limited sapwood are permitted in this grade.

w No 3 Black Label Shingles are a utility grade for economy applications and secondary buildings. No less than 5-1/2-inch clear on 16-inch and 18-inch shingles, and 10-inch clear on 24-inch shingles.

w No. 4 or Undercoursing is a utility grade for interior accent walls or for undercoursing on double-coursed wall applications.

w No. 1 and No. 2 Rebutted and Rejointed have the same specifications as No. 1 and No. 2 grade shingles but are machine-trimmed to obtain parallel edges with butts sawn at right angles. Used for applications where tightly fitting or parallel joints between shingles are desired. Also available with smooth sanded face.

Handsplit shakes are split with the natural grain of the wood and have a highly textured surface. They are produced in four types: Handsplit-and-Resawn, Straight-split, Tapersplit and Taper-sawn. Lengths are 18-inch and 24-inch.

w No. 1 Handsplit-and-Resawn Shakes have split faces and sawn backs. Cedar logs are first cut into desired lengths. Blanks or boards of proper thickness are split and then run diagonally through a bandsaw to produce two tapered shakes from each blank. Thicker and heavier through the butt than other shakes.

w No. 1 Tapersplit Shakes are produced largely by hand, using a sharp-bladed steel froe and a wooden mallet. A natural taper is achieved by reversing the block, end-for-end, with each split. Straight-split shakes are produced by splitting from the same end of the block.

w No. 1 Taper-sawn Shakes are produced with sawn faces and backs. The taper is achieved by angling the cedar block relative to saw blade for each cut.
